ok which one of you wants to explain the relationships between:
- sunblock
- foundation
- concealer
- color corrector
to me.

my understanding is that moisturizer is for dry skin and cleanser is for oily skin. mine is on not particularly either, perhaps a bit on the oily side.
the only thing i'd be interested in using makeup for i think is evening out the texture of my skin somewhat, i have fairly large pores on my nose and cheeks and although laser is working pretty well still i usually have some remnants of facial hair/razor burn/shaving cuts
i think that foundation is usually a bottom layer in makeup but like. a layer under what.
@tholindeth typically blush and contouring go on over foundation. i would typically use colour correction underneath foundation, if at all — you are using complementary colours to cancel out features that stand out, like something orangey for blue undereye bags or beard shadow, something green for red patches, etc. but it's fiddly and easy to overdo so that's a step i usually skip
@tholindeth as for sunscreen i usually use something with spf at the end of my skincare regimen and before makeup proper, if that makes sense
@triz certainly, thanks for a clear explanation.
so if i'm not doing blush, contouring or something else, foundation could be the only makeup i put on, yes?
@tholindeth yes, but certain heavier formulations will look cakey and uncanny by themselves
@triz then is there something that's meant to be a top layer? is that what a "finish" is?
@tholindeth think of it like a painting. skincare is like bob ross slathering the canvas in gesso before the episode. foundation is filling in the forms, making the big shapes of the mountains in the background where you're looking at it like "i don't see how this is going to look like anything." then blush and contour and eyeshadow are your lighting effects, and eyeliner, mascara and lipstick are the details that pull it all together where it goes from a bunch of lumps to a recognizable scene
@tholindeth and baking, setting spray etc are the varnish on top to protect it
@tholindeth for example, the foundation on the left is meant to be a lighter, more "clean girl aesthetic" kind of look. it's less pigmented and can absolutely be your only layer. the one on the right is a poreless matte, which is great for a more dramatic look or for covering more flaws but if used alone will remove visual depth and make your face look uncanny. i would recommend at the very least wearing it with blush to put some life back in your cheeks and probably some bronzer/contour
@tholindeth ignore the difference in shade, one was bought in summer and one in winter
@tholindeth as for concealer, that is a step immediately before foundation generally for me. i use it to blend out blemishes but also to gently highlight prominent places like the cupid's bow or the bridge of the nose, in a process annoyingly termed "uplighting", sort of the reverse of contouring
@triz did they, forget about the word "highlighting," or what
@tholindeth i mean basically lol
@tholindeth this is absolutely not the case. all skin types benefit from both moisturiser and cleanser; you'll want to choose products formulated for your skin type (in your case 'normal skin'). you'll usually also want two separate moisturisers, a lighter day cream and a heavier night cream
