    I am amazed that an asshole figured out how to make it easy for users to paywall a blog and got a ton for reinventing the blog. I'm talking about #Substack of course. Makes me wish I knew more tech people back when I was a teen. I could have been rich! Oh and guess what Substack folks? Did you know you're blogging? I can follow via RSS and everything! Hell, that's also what #Patreon is. Can't believe they got millions for reinventing the blog.

    Maybe it's time for me to enter my capitalist era.

    @WeirdWriter I absolutely refuse to read anything published on Substack out of principle.

    I don't know go publish yourself a blog with literally any other blogging platform

    Yes!

    Substack is the literal Nazi bar of publishing platforms, and has been from launch.

    They also have highlighted, and continue to highlight some of the worst people, like Bari Weiss.

    @WeirdWriter putting aside the nazi bar issue (which is more clear-cut), they provide a simple way for bloggers to be paid for their writing. RSS alone doesn’t do that as far as I know. So I’m not sure the comparison is fair?

    @llPK True. Ghost is an alternative though, and 404 media makes it work via RSS, but I agree that I don’t know how complicated that is on the backend and I guess Substack provides a turnkey solution

    @WeirdWriter it took me a while to realize this myself but these kinds of people don't get that money for the thing they made, they get that money for the people they know (and the privilege embedded in their identity) and the 'invention' is just a fig leaf for public communication.

    it also explained a lot about why I was always having trouble finding even the most minimal amount of funding for my open-source projects even though people one degree removed from me were getting bags of money; I was talking about ethics and they weren't.

    @joepie91 Actually, this makes a world of sense. I just look at the popularity of the platform and then I guess I just automatically assumed that it was popular because it was made, not who the asshole is or who knows the asshole or likes the asshole. Fun fact, way back when I initially published this list, the CEO actually called me a poor loser blogger so that was the highlight of my year! sightlessscribbles.com/posts/s

    @WeirdWriter Wordpress has been around for ages so i kind of dont see the point or popularity of substack. It also is very telling how substack is big with people who are already somwhat well known

    @CathyBikesBook I don’t really understand either, but from what I’ve heard, Substack is essentially a turnkey solution for getting paid for your newsletter/blog/whatever publication
