@meltedcheese @cobalt123 And I keep telling people "there is no 'we'" when it comes to this issue. We are not the ones doing the damage, we are the ones this is being done to and asked to take responsibility for.
@nini @cobalt123 You are right. A collective “we” is not correct. “They” is not correct either. A relatively small group of people made decisions about fossil fuels and by the time the first scientific theories — warnings — about global warming due to fossil fuels were published (mid-19th C. ?) society was well on the way to becoming addicted. Let’s say that greater awareness of the theory was thin until the evidence for warming was unequivocally confirmed and the dangers publicized, beginning sometime around 1970. There was probably plenty of time to halt global warming but the negative economic and social effects of doing anything were too much for political decision-makers to confront and the fossil fuels industry was incentivized to ignore, coverup and actively oppose doing anything. “We” didn’t know, didn’t care. I hope there is time for humanity to learn from these mistakes.
@meltedcheese @nini These are not mistakes as such for those with power and greed as their primary motivations. There are always havens and rewards for the victors, or so the thinking goes.
“Humanity” may learn from mistakes but it appears individuals who aspire to the rewards the elite are getting—well, they are increasing in numbers far more than I would have ever thought could happen.
