so far through the playthroughs my opinion is about the same as before:

ODST > 3 > 1 > 2

2 is by far the weakest entry because it tries to go (surely following the initial success) for this big epic story but ends up with some serious pacing problems which makes some missions rather boring (though it does get better over time)

3 pretty much takes all the ambition of 2 but makes it consistently fun and has plenty of gameplay improvements and new gear that all fit in rather well (also, hammertime)

1 is too grounded for its own good at times but very good too

ODST is well, quirky

you get all the elements but where the main games give you a big hero and an epic saga spanning galaxies, here you get a bunch of soldiers dropped into an urban warzone left on their own and end up navigating neon noir city ruins with a hardboiled silent protagonist and a jazzy backdrop and by the end it turns into a scifi spectacle anyway

so i like it because it's neat and cool and compact and you get pretty varied gameplay too
