Trying to find a program for my purposes that isn’t AI-poisoned is a nightmare. Anyone know of a way to convert a Youtube video’s subtitles/transcript into a plaintext document? I like having instructions that could easily be an enthusiast’s blog post rather than a 2 hour video that is far slower than my ability to read.

I can now confirm that this brand new MP3 player has a REAL clickwheel!

Not just a mechanical wheel. An actual wheel with a touch pad that clicks for song and file navigation! And yes, the centre is a button that clicks too!

Why am I excited about this?

As we all know, Apple stopped making iPods. The iPod Classic, Nano, and Shuffle was discontinued long, long ago. And very few non-Apple MP3 players since have had clickwheels.

This one was bought off Amazon for $83.99 and has a 64GB of storage—which is slightly more than what my iPod Classic had right before it was stolen.

This also uses Rockbox firmware, which gives it an intuitive iPod-like UI and functionality. You can look at photos and watch movies on it—even read books, but who would read books on this thing? Whatever, it’s here.

But there’s more! This MP3 player can play lossless .flac files. Which is something my iPod couldn’t do. It also has Bluetooth connectivity. And it sports an FM radio.

How does it sound, though? Well, I’m listening on Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones—plugged right into the 3.5mm jack—and it sounds great. As good as an iPod, perhaps better.

This thing purports to have 25 hour of audio playback with wired headphones at half volume. I’m not sure about this, but I’m testing it. Nevertheless, this is where my old iPod Classic has the edge because it offered 30 hours of audio playback.

One further benefit: it works with Linux. Nothing like iTunes is required. It’s just a matter of dragging and dropping files onto the device—which makes it way more useful to me than an iPod since, well, I like to use my Bazzite desktop PC for CD ripping.

If this just acts like an iPod, I am very happy. And yes, since this is cheap, I expect there to be “surprises”. But so far, this is a suitable—and cheap—iPod replacement!

I spotted a photo of a Uno next to a bunch of those self-adhesive nylon push pins, the sort of things that you might have mounted a motherboard to if you were building yourself a machine based around a 286. That I think explains it - you were meant to poke four of them into a Uno's holes and stick it to the side of something, not form a project around it.

Don't ask me where Uno shields come into that design philosophy.

I have successfully installed ClarisWorks 5.0

I'm settling for mounting it to the rest of the project by the two clear ones at the back and letting the rest dangle in the breeze.

We're not going to talk about how I'm going to mount the other board, which only has two mounting holes and they're sized for M2 screws.

How are the mounting holes on an #Arduino Uno supposed to work? There's so little clearance to other components that you can't get screws or even M3 standoffs to sit in place. What am I supposed to do, use incredibly long M3 bolts and just crank nuts down on top of random components to hold it in place? How is that meant to work when you're using a shield, the only reason I can think of to actually still use a Uno for anything?

Have you ever turned back the system clock on a piece of hardware so that the software on it will keep running?

And with less than an hour total of effort, I have an electrical concoction that is capable of rotating a thing slowly for hours and hours while some epoxy resin evenly cures on it.

A bit over a decade into electronics as a hobby and I'm finally at the point where I actually have all the bits and bobs and tools I need for a complex project just sitting here already. I should do a tool drawer tour thread here at some point soon.

Next step is to 3D print a mount for the motor.

My #soldering skills have, um, improved dramatically in the time since I bought this #Arduino motor shield.

Day one and the flat surface test is still a bit tacky, and I can make an impression in it with a fingernail. I'll use this test to judge when I can reveal the window test piece - once it's been 24 hours with no changes in how the flat one feels, I'll peel the window one apart and hope it doesn't lens itself.
