in the spirit of capitalist illusion of choice Capital Party comes in different brands with different packaging but the ingredients are mostly the same.
its not even ten and its getting dark.
#winnipeg summer coming to a close.
im gonna finish the series out of completionism and spite, and cause book ten is ff so maybe the ship will right itself somehow, but im not holding my breath.
anyway i read the first few and was like, "this is a good start, id like to see how this develops and progresses," only to find that later books neither develop nor progress anything interesting.
if anything, the later books seem simpler, less kinky, and less transgressive than the first few. the series gets quieter and safer.
book 7 was a het romance where he loved her from the start and pursued her and she… also loved him from the start? zero darkness, zero character conflict.
not to mention, the formula of "he's a monster, she's an innocent, but she can discover her own darkness to make him HER monster" theme is… stretched thin, at this point. especially since "her own darkness" that she discovers is almost always… checks notes… setting and maintaining healthy emotional boundaries.
seriously. "her darkness" is pretty much just her saying "no" people who want to control her.
kind of depressing to think about an audience that finds that transgressive
the ONE ff romance so far was a subplot inside a polyam romance. and it was… tepid.
ultimately unsurprising, tho, since the one-trick-pony of the series relies heavily on gendered bullshit—he's a violent monster, she can temper him, together they will overcome—that the author doesnt seem to be able to transcend.
(or perhaps, to be fair, the author knows what the audience wants)
id love to see those roles flipped, but that does not appear to be in the cards.
i have now read seven of the ten Dark Olympus books, which are supposed to be edgy-kinky-sexy-hot and are increasingly turning out to be the blandest, most vanilla, babys-first-kink-show pablum imaginable. the first few show real promise that the rest just dont deliver on.
they are also kind of depressingly straight, and honestly i think thats half the problem. the next one is mm, and im steeling myself for the most white-straight-ladies-fantasizing-about-gays content imaginable.
with today's revelation that its not even a ten minute bike ride to my new job, i am seriously considering becoming one of those fat tire winter bicyclist people
