Usually by now, we have our onions all harvested and hung up to dry, but it's been so wet in July that the onions (Ailsa Craig) just kept growing and only just now have begun to flop over. More rain coming tonight and tomorrow, but after that we've got to get these pulled and drying. BeetBear says he's going to need a bigger wheelbarrow! 😀 🧅

I think I get it now.

CEOs are influencers. The CEO of a public company, or of a private company that needs to raise a lot of funds can't just run the company and try to make money, they need to be a public person, interesting, controversial.

They need to say things that will aid in the speculative project. So, being in the news for saying something wicked and avaricious just shows what a "good" CEO you are.

It's a little like professional wrestling or politics too now.

The mission of the video platform has to be about independence and FOSS but that's not enough. It also has to be about building an ad-free framework for viral (yes viral, popular) content.

What I think we have now are alternatives that work fine as long as you aren't popular. I think in the alt-net we have a kind of contempt for popular viral things, because so often the drive to make them is serving ads or being nefarious.

We really need to get over that.

Have I waxed poetic yet about #vegan mayo? I'm not a vegan, but eating more vegan lately for health reasons. Vegan mayo is delicious. I prefer it to regular mayo. Disappointing, however, was that "buttery" margarine that's full of fucking palm oil. Made the worst chocolate chip cookies. I will gladly put olive oil on my baked potatoes, but cookies require real butter.

Up the road from us is a roadside memorial for some kid who killed himself drunk driving. Whoever put up this memorial recently brought out landscapers to make it over. Looks ok, but it's all landscape plants that are not doing well with neglect. My plan is, once the rains come, to scatter these native California poppy, aster & columbine seeds. All have lovely flowers and can actually handle the dry season.

A dark day for human rights.

You can't see all of the old dudes who are working on our deck in this photo. All are retired and want to help us get our new deck up.
A truckload of materials arrived this morning as well as extra old dudes. The original brothers called in more brothers. There are 12 siblings all together.
The decking will be installed today with the rails and stairs next week.
My husband is touched by their kindness in finishing his unfinished project. He truly doesn't know how to thank them.
In the crowd is a fellow Vietnam veteran who is a bladder cancer survivor too. He can commiserate with my husband, his old friend, in a way most of us can't.
Summer is keeping an eye on them.
Just in case.
