man charged after ostrich egg thrown during protest
Police said that an "unusually fast-growing" ostrich had emerged unharmed, attaining a size slightly above adult size within a matter of seconds. Several members of the public were attacked by the ratite, who according to a zoological expert, was "likely suffering from a sense of malaise and aggravation due to having already reached middle age, mere seconds after coming into existence". The bird was last seen attempting to register domain names

if the fridge didnt have windows on it, the customers wouldnt be able to see whats in it

first, why can fridges go up to 50 degrees celsius, and second, why are the fridges on the internet. is it because of outsourcing. is it because no business buys anything anymore, its all opex, they just rent the fridge, and if anything goes wrong with the fridge the fridge company sends someone out, but it costs the fridge company money, so they prefer to get someone at head office to telnet into the fridge and cat /dev/gpio1 to see if the compressor has stalled. i bet it runs windows actually

the technology really doesn't matter so much as the fact that it has exposed a difference in values between people. it has created multiple incompatible worlds, which were possibly always there, but only in theory. it has made those hypotheticals into real choices. it's forced us to all sit down and actually choose. except it's not a free choice, it's not a consumer choice like which toothpaste to buy. it's a choice like "do i avenge my father by killing the man who killed him" kind of choice

problem with AI discourse is we're trying to use a technical conversation, where we analyse the development and operation of a technology, to discuss people. the real topic is the people: the people that make or use 'AI'. we're trying to understand them. we didn't realize there were people like this. but now we've discovered that there are, so we're trying to figure it out. via debate and insult, we're trying to work out what the fuck is going on with these people. not the technology, the people

there's something similar with video games. the good video games are about someone noticing something structural or behavioral about the real world they find fascinating or fun, and trying to distill its essence into an interactive model for players. the bad video games are made by people who are trying to make video games just like the video games they've already played, because they've no experience of the richness of the world other than others' predigested models of it

when people were accustomed to office stationery or drafting tables or the shop floor, computer interfaces used those symbols to explain behaviors. now the tools that everybody uses every day just look like nothing. just a rectangle with a screen on it. phones and computers and various shapes of abstract featureless glossy rectangle. sometimes in different colors. nobody's seen anything else. so it's no surprise that all our UIs just look like a series of abstract featureless glossy rectangles

i remember a lot of discourse which probably started in the 80s and 90s about how graphical computing was going to open this whole new logographic era of design, a spatial interactive era, where our tool-using, mud-pie-making, physics-simulating animal brains would be able to frolic in a virtual workshop of multimedia affordances and widgets. 30 years later, everything is Nothing, identical monochrome icons, text on abstract shapes representing Nothing, animating for no reason, conveying Nothing

computers have replaced so many physical tools that now we can't even design skeuomorphic interfaces properly anymore, because the youngest generation aren't familiar with any of the objects the visual analogies are supposed to suggest

im kind of out of the loop, but when people make games in godot or unity, are they mostly just going on some kind of store and going like "ooh. thats a cool particle effect. ill have that he he he" like a little goblin. like a little goblin gnome? like a tiny goblin gnome man. like a kind of weird, little goblin hobbit gnome elf man, who is picking up little bits of things and collecting them, not really making a game but collecting things, like a little goblin gnome instead of making a game

half the pixel art games i see nowadays are too low-res. everyones making these games with like, 5x5 characters. these little sprite guys who are 4x4 pixels. sure, maybe atari 2600 games looked like that. maybe VIC-20 games looked like that. maybe games on your casio watch. but you cant tell what the fuck's going on. thats probably why they have to draw them in full 24-bit color

before dogma there was simply dog

imagine thinking that the furries are some fad born of a modern woke agenda, and not a remanifestation of the pre-holocene ancient rites, an animation of the mutable clay that is the sense of self and form so inextricable from sentience that it was daubed and scratched in times that preceded all languages and civilisations and traditions and their dogmas

you see some game developer who writes at length about server infrastructure, ad integration, CI/build system, deployment, sales, analytics, player telemetry, dashboards. and you wonder what type of games this person is designing. what kind of joy they want to inspire in others? but you cant find anything about the actual games. and you check out their portfolio, and the games are called something like "war eagle 3" and "crystal collector"

the latest tech? oh you just HAVE to use it. you won't be able to stop yourself. that new tech? you'll just have to buy it as soon as you see it. you won't be able to live without it. the new device? yeah as soon as you get it, it's almost like you won't be able to go back. yeah! you'll just HAVE to check it out. now we all have it, you'll never be able to go back to the old way

after 15 years, iOS has finally caught up with all the main android features, such as
- very mid ui design
- kinda floaty feeling
- unpolished vibe
android itself has progressed little, although it is rapidly achieving feature parity with iOS on "locked down user hostility". overall both ecosystems look very appealing, energetic, and healthy, for shareholders

in the old days, when you would come out with your gender etc, it was pretty stressful for all involved, trying to get everything worked out. thankfully nowadays, with the internet, we can issue hotfixes and patches afterward, and even tweak some aspects or add additional content later on

i still have my iphone 4. i just held it. it feels amazing. it feels like the future of phone

all i want is a small phone. all i want is a small phone!!!!
