This is a "paradox" that I just stumbled across on wikipedia.

It says, basically, that traffic gets better when public transit gets better and gets worse when public transit gets worse, and is otherwise essentially unaffected or only negatively impacted by improvements (or degradation) in the quality of roads.

If you want traffic to get better, build trains.

So the idea here is that I'm trying to do some pop culture videos, because I have weird and very specific pop culture interests, ideas, and meta-ideas, and I want to talk about and share those.

Also because I'm making toys, and games, and television, and I want to talk about those things, and how and why I do things the way that I do those things.

And then, also also, I want to talk about Computers and tech writ large, because I feel like some of the things that I do with computers are somewhat novel and would be beneficial for other people to know about, and because I want to encourage certain modes of thinking about computers and electronics, and see what that discussion might bring.

I've been slowly working on a video series.

Mostly, right now, I'm writing and doing a little bit of set design, still feeling around the edges of exactly what I'm trying to accomplish and (importantly) what I'm trying to do with the character I will inhabit while recording these videos.

You know, normal stuff.

I'm going to talk about this a little bit, where it sits right now, and what I'm planning on doing, and then I'm going to watch a spooky movie for the Remix The Spooky thread I've been running.

So this will be a short thread, and it might get interrupted in the middle by dinner, or by me finally making up my mind on what I'm going to watch, or by lots of other things who knows.

Neon, the company that distributed Parasite; Long Legs; I, Tonya; Pig; among many others is reported to *also* have an SCP film in the works.

And they have already committed to releasing it CC-BY-SA

https://deadline.com/2026/09/scp-foundation-movie-neon-open-source-creative-commons-license-1237143453/

I wrote about A24's alleged SCP movie which will probably not be creative commons licensed, and therefore will probably not be an SCP film (see thread ending here: https://retro.social/deck/@ajroach42/117315397746610016)

Today, I have much weirder news to share.

I've never encountered an actually revolutionary technology that people had to be forced to use.

If you do art, or write, or make things, in what ways do you tell people about what you're doing?

Hey!

I'm looking for advice from other independent creative people who produce things and sell them, either physically or digitally, as to how you advertise and market your wares.

I make toys and video games, and help people release music, and make video and podcast stuff.

I have done lots of marketing things in the past, but I am in the mood to completely rebuild and recreate our marketing channels, and entirely overhaul everything about how I try to tell people about what we do.

So!

So if you have any experience with DCP playback on linux on consumer hardware, or building a DCP package using primarily or entirely open source systems, let's chat!

Now, I'm not an expert here at all. I don't really know anything about DCP.

But one thing I've learned is that if I talk about stuff on the internet, I will frequently come across someone who knows more about that topic and is willing to talk about it.

I've been reading about the DCP (digital cinema package) standard.

If you're not familiar, this is the standard distribution format for movies in theaters.

It's an open standard built, built around linux PCs and JPEG2000, with movies distributed as 100+ GB files on ext2 formatted HDDs and/or SSDs.

Can someone explain the benefits of a folding phone to me? I don't think I get it, but I know some folks who love them.

Seems too fragile to my mind?

House party was, in fact, a creek party. We had paella. Now I'm grateful for a/c.

Believe it or not, I've been doing that *while* writing that far too long thread about the music I was listening to as I did it.

Today has been a great day for dicking around on nothing of significance.

I was invited to a house party today, so I'm currently charging my gamedad and re-organizing my roms so that I don't feel entirely out of place in a nearly stranger's home surrounded by actual strangers.

Storm so hard it blew the door open.

This is a shitpost

The fact that you pick your seat at the theater by poking a pictogram on a small screen, rather than by physically sitting down in a seat is one of the myriad ways we've become alienated from our neighbors and the physical world.

I'm still in a car and still more than 3 hours from home, driving through rural Alabama, so I may not update this thread as quickly as I otherwise would.

But this is a thread.

With the news that fox is buying Roku, I'm more determined than ever that we need a Community Entertainment System #CES But not that CES

I've tried lots of different configurations over the last few years and been deeply disappointed with all of them.

I've rolled my own software, and been pretty disappointed with it too.

But things are more pressing now than they were before, and that makes me more willing to overlook some papercuts and instead focus on getting the 80% product.
