I got this letter from Senator Gillibrand, unprovoked. And I'm ngl, being seen goes a LONG way right now.

    Dear
Because you've previously reached out to my office about the rights and dignity of transgender
New Yorkers, I want to write to you directly about yesterday's disappointing Supreme Court
decision — and to tell you clearly what it means here in New York.
Yesterday, in a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court upheld laws in Idaho and West Virginia allowing
those states to ban transgender girls and women from competing in girls' and women's school
sports. I want to be honest: this ruling is a painful setback, and I am deeply troubled by it. No
young person should be told by a politician they don't belong — not in their school, not on their
team, not in their community.
But here is what I also want you to know: this ruling does not change the law in New York. The
Court's decision was narrow. While it upheld bans in states that had enacted them — it did not
require other states to follow. New York has not enacted such a ban, and New York's laws actively
protect transgender New Yorkers from discrimination. The New York State Public High School
Athletic Association has had an inclusive policy since 2015, allowing students to participate in
sports consistent with their gender identity. The New York Human Rights Law, the Civil Rights
Law, and voters’ passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in 2024 all reinforce those protections.
Attorney General Letitia James has fought and won in court to defend them. For transgender
students in New York, nothing has changed today.
I have spent my career fighting alongside the LGBTQ+ community, and I won't stop now. I've led
the fight against the Trump administration's discriminatory transgender military ban — twice —
because no one who is qualified and willing to serve this country should be turned away for who
they are. I've championed legislation to protect transgender children in the foster care and
adoption system. I've pushed back on every attempt to use government spending bills as a vehicle
to strip LGBTQ+ Americans of their rights and dignity. The Human Rights Campaign has given my
record a perfect score throughout my time in the Senate — not because of words, but because of
the fights I've chosen to take on.
I know that for many New Yorkers, and for many families across this country, yesterday's ruling
felt like an attack on someone they love. It was. And I want you to know I see that, and I will not
look away from it. I'll continue standing with the transgender community in New York and across
the country — in the courts, in the Senate, and wherever the fight is.
If you have questions or need assistance, my office is always here for you.
With you in this fight,
Sincerely,
Kirsten Gillibrand
United States Senator
