On November 17, a young man named August left a facility he was taken to for help.
August is autistic, non-verbal and vulnerable.
He was found two days ago, after being lost for 24 days. His mom specifically thanked the homeless community:
“I owe a special debt to the homeless men and women of this city, whose vigilance, kindness, and relentless search for August humbled me," Lori Beckwith wrote. "Some of the most profound generosity came from those with the least to give.

Having served the homeless here in SLC, and witnessing service to them for decades, I have to say I am not surprised at their kindheartedness.

Like any other class or group, they're not all kind-hearted, but the entire class can't be judged for that. A homeless person:
-- smashed windows of my car in broad daylight to steal toilet paper, a flat of Dr. Pepper (which they didn't take because it wasn't alcoholic as they'd hoped), a jacket, and a tent;
-- attacked a female coworker in a crosswalk without provocation, punching her squarely in the face.
Those specific people I don't want to thank for their service.

Or because it's heavy and they can't afford dental if their teeth rot? Or already have cavities and can't drink sugary drinks? Sounds like they took what they needed, and they needed it more than you.
Rather than assuming that they're bad people, maybe think about what you'd have to go through to take those actions yourself? That's the logical thing to do.

It seems to me from your toot that you found these two incidents traumatic. I can understand that.
I think that it would have been better if you had started a new discussion rather than replying to a positive story about homeless people.
Why do people become #homeless?
The main reason is that #billionaires rig our economies so that there is insufficient money allocated to social housing and welfare programs.
Thus anyone can become vulnerable and then homeless.

The post made the implication that all homeless people are kind. I observed from personal experience that it isn't consistently true. Celebrate the ones who are kind, but don't mischaracterize an entire class. Usually stereotyping runs the other direction, but neither direction is helpful.

I feel that you have inferred that the toot means that the thanks was given to all in the homeless community.
The mother of the missing person reportedly said:
“I owe a special debt to the homeless men and women of this city..."
Not
"“I owe a special debt to ALL OF the homeless men and women of this city..."
My changes to the original quote are given in capitals.

Vulcan, you can thank Ronald Reagan for those things. In the 1980s he closed mental health facilities choosing instead to fund police. The media encourages us to be angry with the most vulnerable amongst us. But you are misguided.

Prior to his death in 2019 my brother Stu helped manage homeless camps in Seattle and Portland, organized ICE protests and pressured city officials to provide affordable housing. He and the members of the community he told me about were wonderfully kind and generous, as were those who reached out to me after his death.
