    @MissConstrue What makes me want to scream is that this was predictable for months. Once that NYT story dropped--and that was hardly the first beat--I knew that there was more waiting to be dropped at the worst possible time. This didn't require being psychic, it required awareness of previous history.

    People showed their asses with this one. Outlets like @theprospect that scolded us to respect realpolitik acted like they couldn't see what was coming. Once again, if it's about women--eh.

    @dnkboston You might find these an interesting read. Someone linked them yesterday and I still had them open in tabs:

    The class politics one is so earnest, but could use an editor with a firm hand. That said, the premise "Platner is more of a working class man as imagined by an elite. There is an extent to which this is a kind of lurid caricature projected onto the lower classes by elites, one that blends misogyny and class prejudice." is a brilliant one, and I wish more of the article had built on that, and the similarity of his Middle East "adventures" and the "explorers" of the Empire age.

    I've not had a chance to read the other one yet.

    @MissConstrue Thank you, I'll read!

    Reminds me of what someone wrote about Jack Monroe, a food writer and anti-poverty activist in the UK. Some if not most of their stuff was in earnest and came from experience, but there's also the sense that part of their popularity was due to projecting an "idealized" version of poverty that a certain upper-middle class person would vibe with. "Oh look, here's how you can make proper biscuits when you don't have a can opener!"

    Tl;dr: the media loves this.

    @MissConstrue Oh, dude, read the second one. I want to be sick (which I appreciate is not usually a good recommendation, but you know what I mean). I think the author does a good job of unpacking a lot of the misogyny.

    FTR, I don't think cheating has to exclude someone. If I could have voted in 1988, I would have voted for Hart. But we're past that, and Anthony Weiner is a more recent demonstration of why we have to be weary about lousy judgment.

    I need to drink some seltzer now.
