@michal we use it too ☕
It's a matter of taste.
Delta has a somewhat centralized development model, i.e. all client (have to) use the same underlying framework. Writing an independent client from scratch is almost impossible, I've heard.
In contrast, #Jabber/#XMPP is a diverse #ecosystem, grown over more than 27 years, applied to various use cases (even #IoT), an #openStandard by #IETF and #XSF.
The former is easier and faster to develop for, but also has limitations. I personally prefer the latter.
@michal I'm glad to see it getting some talk. I've been talking about it as the telegram killer, because it can actually do what telegram lies about doing.
I am conflicted.
It's hard enough persuading people to switch from WhatsApp to Signal.
Now with Delta Chat, they would also have to familiarise themselves with the new app (including the brand that they do not know) and set up a relay.
I understand the appeal of distributed networks, but I've lost count of the number of people who have become confused when I've tried to explain what instances are on Mastodon. Now I'd have to have a similar discussion about a messaging app.
@jarekkopec that's all true, but I actually found it quite easy to switch some people to DC. The best example would be my aunt who doesn't care about the technical aspects and yet she was able to install the app by herself and started chatting right away. So give it a try, you might be surprised with how well people react to DC 😉
« the desktop apps for Windows or macOS, or through the mobile apps for Android or iOS. »
With no Linux desktop app it remains inaccessible to me.
I'm very well away that I'm in a minority so vanishingly small it may approach 1. But still…
@calmeilles but there is an official Linux app! I suppose the author was targeting the mainstream audience and thus no mention of it.
@michal Okay, got it.
