    #Belgium #WorldCup team isn't happy, and I don't blame them.

I don't know what their options are, but they should use every resource available to them to keep Balogun out of the game on Monday, regardless the controversy surrounding the call. The red card was given, and it should stand.

There have been 12 red cards in the World Cup, including the one just given to England tonight.

None of those players were given special consideration. Not one.

    ROYAL BELGIAN
FOOTBALL
ASSOCIATION

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision
to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA-Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time]

FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA PCP RAY Code. This
provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction.

However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for al previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup.

Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5:

"If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card
(second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's
subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed.”

The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating
member associations on 12 May 2026.

The same rule is reiterated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Coordination
Meeting prior to each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026
workshop presentations.

In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options.

@PattyHanson I know it's not going to happen, but in an ideal world no one would show up for the matches against the US. If FIFA wants to cheat to give Trump the trophy at least deny them any plausibility of fairness.

*EDIT* Turns out the rumors were just rumors. Balogun is in the starting XI

I'm hearing rumors tonight that the coach, and maybe Balogun himself, are considering not playing him tomorrow night.

That would be the right thing to do.

But FIFA has ruined the tournament and its credibility.

So true! If Balogun had any sense of fairness or personal strength (more anyway than FIFA Infantini or Thump - not exactly a high bar) he would refuse to play.

@Su_G @PattyHanson @jmcs this is much worse than football. It clearly confirms that Trump is an autocrat( making up the rules that suits him) and whatever is left of the American democracy is in great danger. It would be a history book moment if Ballogun did not play... But can he really do it without risking the curse of the king?.

@tomtom @Su_G @jmcs Your point is exactly what US citizens must ignore. We, as a nation, have gotten to this place because regular ppl have become so afraid of the wrath of Trump & his soldiers that they (we) seemingly have given up the fight. You can't win when you won't fight. Trump is relishing in the chaos & fear he's created. So many ppl are seeing the overturning of the suspension as the fair result for an unjust call instead of what it is - a corrupt advantage other teams aren't receiving

@PattyHanson ETTD. Infantino of the Big Baldy Head Society has a lot of questions to answer, and if there's any justice he'd be out of a job by 9:30 on Monday morning, but....

@PattyHanson Expecting FIFA to be fair to all, or even follow its own rules? They've already got away with numerous breaches in the last few years, and acted in a manner not befitting a sports association, including issuing a 'Peace prize' to a warmonger...

@UkeleleEric Don't misunderstand. I hate FIFA. I was hoping the team would do the right thing and not play him, but now after more time has passed since my post, it appears they're leaning the opposite direction and celebrating. I'm really disappointed.

I'm not arguing whether he should have or not been shown the card in the first place. My argument is no other team or player would have or is getting the same preferential treatment.

@Quantillion In my opinion a boycott would only work if all remaining teams participated, and that won't happen. A win over the US with Balogun on the pitch, if that's what the US coach decides, would make a bigger statement.

@PattyHanson I'm all for Team USA, also, the incident has been handled by FIFA in the worst possible way. Reversing a red card after the president of the country who is hosting the tournament makes a request hurts everyone involved. If the US beats the Belgians it will feel like a cheap victory. The Belgians also have every right to fight that decision.

    >I don't know what their options are

maybe a bit radical and a bit gamesmanship but use your worst player to make a foul that break baloguns leg?

@utf_7 Yeah. I don't think I'd support that. The player isn't involved in the politics. There are plenty of people who say the red card was unjustified and that is reason enough to overturn the suspension, but that's not my argument. My argument is that the rule should apply universally, and with this action FIFA has set a really bad precedent of allowing a country leader to interfere.

@PattyHanson You know it’s bad when the conduct is too egregious for *Sepp Blatter*.
I see UEFA have publicly condemned it as well. Cynical me says it’ll be a flash in the pan and everyone will grumble about it but do nothing. Maybe Infantini will be shuffled towards the door at the next opportunity.

Unduly-Optimistic me would like to think that UEFA could make a serious threat about breaking from FIFA after the tournament, leave the US, CONCACAF and the Qataris to do whatever it is they want and set up a new world tournament with other reliable countries.

Guess it all depends whether Balogun chooses to play and if so, whether the US wins.
