I went down a certain rabbit hole because a social network with baked-in identity verification embraced & promoted by EU politicians feels like an existential threat to the fediverse.
so now I'm taking a different approach:
teaching people how to self-host their own fedi instances in case things escalate and the EU introduces a mandate for age verification across all social media
yeah and no diss on that. it is really too bad they are doing such a bad job when the opportunity are so there to do it right :(
i just miss the elena from the fediverse video, hehe!

And it’s funny because I loved how small my audience was over there when I began - my little quiet corner of the Fediverse!
Well, that quiet corner just surpassed the 4 thousand followers mark I think 😅 so you can have reach on GoToSocial too (whether you want it or not, LOL)

Jul 4, 2026, 3:19 PM@_elena Going to take an opportunity to also promote @ubernauten (uberspace.de) for any Germans and other Europeans who want an easy and affordable way to set up a self-hosted instance. Not some BS corporate operation, but rather, a group of fellow nerds providing infrastructure for other nerds like me to do nifty things. Their Uberlab documentation is spot-on, available in English and German, and thanks to that it took me all of 10-15 minutes to get my GoToSocial instance up and running on the Fediverse. I also trust that they respect my privacy in accordance with EU data protection regulations. Very supportive of their operation, and I think it's a Good Thing for others who want to effectively self-host but maybe don't have the hardware, bandwidth, skills, or time / energy to spare, to do everything at home.
