At #Area51 at 5:30 AM watched a vole hop easily over my anti vole shield as I watered and proceed to move its young from their now water logged nest. I stopped watering once I noticed, even if I have no love for voles.

It’s black current and black raspberry season. First blueberries ripe too.

    #gardening

A hand holds a dozen small knobby black raspberries in early morning sunlight. The berry bush is beyond, out of focus. The berries are a dark purple, almost black when ripe, and red as they grow.
Looking into a black current bush that is loaded with big round shiny berries in clumps on the stems. There are hundreds under the foliage.

Wait, what is an anti vole shield? I need one (does it also work for moles— I’m not sure if I have moles or voles)

@MCDuncanLab moles are insectivores and don’t eat plants, but dig tunnels and can be perceived as harmful in lawn areas. Voles are rodents they are little jerks who will eat your seedlings or tulips and pull them into their shallow tunnels so it looks like the tulip is fine until you look closer and the stem is cut and being munched as you stand there looking it gets shorter and shorter. Jerks.

The anti vole shield is not one at all, just a metal edged raised bed I thought too tall for them to get over and sunk in enough they couldn’t tunnel under. No dice. Little jerk just hopped right up and over.

Last year though, I had a happily hunting weasel, the only real anti vole shield. Haven’t seen it yet this year.

@IcooIey Would you mind showing/telling me what your back raspberry plants are like? I need to find a place for my little ones and it would help to understand how they might turn out

@TheDonsieLass oh these are wild, just growing alongside a path in full sun with a lot of weeds.

I do have both red and yellow raspberries. Some in part shade and some in full sun. They are a bit hard to contain, like to put up new canes all over the place.
