Does anyone have any idea of old publications (ideally ones on the internet archive), modern online communities that discuss media, or any other sources amongst the deaf community where I might find some discussion or writing or anything about how deaf folks felt about Tony, the deaf teen on season 9 of Dallas? Getting a recurring deaf character at all NOW is still rare, much less in the 80s, so I'd really like to know if there's any reactions preserved from that time or if there's any posts about it now from folks remembering it then. I'm about to scour places like reddit but it's like...I know where to go to find Dallas discussions I can search for discussion about deaf representation, I don't know where I might find general deaf community discussions new or old i could search for Dallas discussion.

My single user self hosted server doesn't have a ton of reach so boosts appreciated! I'm adding a few hashtags I found with some use too.

To the person who suggested putting an emergency mylar blanket over the window (my apologies, can't find you comment anymore), wow that worked well. The indoor temp dropped 4C in 15 minutes, and that was with no direct light aimed at the window. I'm surprised that extent of solar energy was coming through. Nice hack, and one that is easy/cheap to do.

Edited to add: I always thought those blankets are opaque, so expected the effect to be like a blackout curtain. But it turned out they are more like a tinted car window. The amount of light is notably reduced, and the residual light bleeds through with an orange tint. But when there's light outside as backlight, the view across the street is still clear and detailed -- just darker. At night it's effectively opaque. (Though don't make any assumptions re privacy since now the interior is what would be backlit.)

Results of my cardboard scrounging last night. Two loads. I didn't plan it this way, but I think I benefited from going out on the next recycling day after Prime Day.
I will say that my neighbors in my housing development are better at flattening boxes than my neighbors a little further away.
After removing as much tape as I can, I'll lay this down and cover with a thick layer of woodchips to help suppress weeds and vines in the back yard. Then plant with natives. #ReUse #Recycle #Gardening

Haha-pop culture fail. One of my undergrads was confused about the relationship of the subunits to a complex. And I tried to reference Voltron- the giant man robot that is made out of smaller cat robots.

None of them knew that reference.

They looked up some images of Voltron and had many questions.

In the end, they do understand that the AP1 complex is made up of four small cats.😂

Snake gourd seems to be enjoying deck life. The ones in the ground are still some days from the first female flower if not more, this speedo might be harvestable early next week.

Heat shields activated.

The deck gets full sun for most of the day. When it's hot and the plants are still tender they need shade.

One of my colleagues just won a big award and our communications team put out a news alert with a clearly staged photo of him in a pristine lab coat at a beautifully clean bench holding a 10ul pipette (used for up to 0.01ml of liquid), sitting next to an empty 1000ml bottle, beaming* at an empty 50ml container held in his hand.

Oh and there's a spiral notepad with writing and an open pen next to him.

*beaming=looking like he's about to bust out laughing.

This is a fun finding. I need to update my biosketch for someone. I tried to login to scienv yesterday. It prompts my login.gov. I put my username and password in. Instead of the security key screen, I next get a screen saying security check failed. No matter what.

Know what I found fixes it? Turning off my ad blocker. Why does my ad blocker need to be turned off for logging into a federal website???

I'm wondering about longevity.

Whether it'll get smelly.

Whether it's actually better environmentally to buy a quality plastic one and use it till it falls apart.

Our current on will probably find some use as storage in the utility room or linen closet, it's just a pain to carry it without handles, and it's not designed in a way that we can fix it.

We need a new laundry basket. Uses: hauling wet laundry from the washer to the deck to hang dry, sometimes drape tops/sock for drying when the line is full, and Molly-cat plays in it. The final handle snapped on the rubbermaid one we bought 15 or so years ago.

Not bad for longevity, but I'm contemplating getting a wicker/willow one.

What says the internet?

Molly probably won't like it because she won't have little holes to stick her paws through to bat at us when she's being sneaky.
