Reading about a director in Historic Environment Scotland who kept his job after using seriously racist language because "a mitigating argument in his defence was that the phrase is commonly used in the Navy" which he had served in for a number of years.

Really? During my formative years I heard many phrases used to describe people different to me, none of which would be acceptable use today and none of which I would ever dream of using. Life experience is no excuse for racist language.
