Still a very ugly tree that I would never put into the game. But I really enjoy that I have reached a point where I feel I have some understanding of what about a model is wrong and deliberately do something to improve it, rather than just trying more or less random things to see if anything gets better.

@Feral_3D The roots are too thin and too few. And there's not enough green on the branches.
But overall, I do like the look.

Getting closer to somewhere, though I don't know yet where there even is.

Turns out this branch looks way too open when put on an actual tree. But since that branch is a pure geometry nodes model I can tinker more with making it fuller tomorrow.

@Feral_3D It looks like ferns, and ferns and conifers were the dominant types of large plants for a very long time, until the now common leafy plants took over only relatively recently towards the end of the dinosaurs.

@misjavanlaatum Yeah, that's something I want to carry forward and refine rather than fix.

Among my major influences for the overall aesthetics are not just 80s space adventure movies, but also dinosaur books.

It's a great pool of references for animals and plants that look somewhat alien but also like they could realistically exist. (Because they did.)
