@MiaMarkTwo If we were going to stop it would have been while we were getting shoved into lockers in junior high school.

@MiaMarkTwo My school had maybe 400 students and only about a dozen of us were nerds. None of us were good at scholastic stuff, so we didn't even get the whole "debate team" "class president" type stuff. We were just awkward kids that smelled bad and didn't understand how to socialize properly.

@roknrol I went to a grammar school, which I don't think you have there - basically they trawl the local high schools and cherrypick all the smart kids - so it was a lot smaller and *extremely* academically focused. In the lower sixth we had to do this week-long training course thing with the boys' grammar called "Captains of Industry" ffs 🙄 😂

@MiaMarkTwo That all sounds deeply unpleasant lol

My school was fairly rural, so most of the kids didn't really have groups of friends anyway, just shared hobbies. Be them sports, or country music, or hunting, or fishing or whatever. A lot of kids worked on farms.

So if you weren't prepared to back up your "smart mouth" with muscle, you got stuffed into a locker. If you really pissed them off they'd close a padlock on it.

That was when I started cultivating a "stay the fuck away from me" vibe. It still seems to work well.

@roknrol Actually I loved school (see previous re: being a nerd). Not maths though 🤣 It was all very much how I imagine Americans see British private schools (it wasn't private) - blazers and straw boaters and lacrosse - until sixth form, when me and my crowd became the weirdos everyone pointed at 😁 By then we didn't care though, we just hung out in the JCR reading room.

Jeez, hunting?!? I guess that goes with rural but it's something I can't get my head around at school age.

@MiaMarkTwo If you saw the original Footloose (with Kevin Bacon) you're halfway to what school was like for me. It wasn't a religious community, but it was a community full of religion and racism and...lots of bad stuff.

@roknrol Great, that's me earwormed for the next couple of hours 😠 🤣

I loved that film. And OMG, yikes. Literally zero god of any kind in my childhood, esp. at my primary school, which was all very "wear your own clothes (not normal in the UK) call me Barbara let's visit the local gurdwara and go fossil hunting and sing Beatles songs instead of hymns".
