@DavidM_yeg @Daveography Required bike parking is part of the new Edmonton zoning by-law (the mega by-law from 2024):
    zoningbylaw.edmonton.ca/part-5

I don't know when it's expected to start being enforced, but I assume that, at least at first, it will only apply to new builds (maybe it already does?).

Under the by-law, most commercial, community, and health care facilities must provide at least 2 bike parking spots, with the amount scaling up with facility size. However, they can ask permission to count city-maintained bike parking, if it's close enough. (And businesses can already ask the city to provide sidewalk bike racks, so I assume that will be the default way to meet the requirements on commercial streets with no parking lots per business.)

Apartment buildings with more than 9 units will also be required to provide at least 1 bike parking spot per unit, most of which must be long-term secure parking.

There are also minimum requirements for bike rack size & structure.

@DavidM_yeg @AmeliasBrain @Daveography Bike parking was a requirement under the old zoning law, too.

There's a bunch of problems with the city's toolbox for regulating this. Zoning controls what can be built, but once it's built and inspectors have signed off, they have no levers for the future. Big changes requiring permits have to conform, but if the bike rack just quietly disappears once day, who's going to do anything.
