@fivetonsflax The one thing they do point out as the "negative side effect" is the "what if I had gotten this sooner?" thoughts. The feeling of suddenly having the 100 radio channels that have been playing in the background all the time drastically reduced, can make you feel a bit down when you think "how would life have been if I got this sooner".

It can be worth preparing for, it did not hit me much but others get that a bit harder.

But compared to "I'm hitting a wall, I have less and less energy as I get older, and my coping mechanism depends on me having energy, how am I ever going to manage this much longer?" mindset, I'd say the latter is a lot more likely to ruin your life.

Heh. My coping mechanism mostly consists of an internal censor. It's exhausting, but I shudder to think of what some of my contacts would say If I stopped doing the polite lies dance that most of society does.

But - reasonable argument. Maybe I'll talk to my doctor about it. (i dropped the Doc who said it to me a decade ago)

@tbortels That sounds more like an autistic comping mechanism than an ADHD coping mechanism, and we remain ever so annoyingly autistic even if we get help with our ADHD,.

But your autistic comping mechanism, if this is what it is, should function well despite medication, at least that is my experience. And you may have a little more energy remaining after a day of doing this, even so.

You may well be right, my only diagnosis was an offhand remark by my MD who wasn't very good otherwise, and my own self-diagnosis of "huh, I do these things and they seem to fit a category".

I'm too old (59) to have received a proper evaluation - I was just the weird quiet kid who was really good at math and ... yeah. Symptoms. And coping mechanisms.
