I gave in and bought a slightly fancy bike computer and the optional cadence sensor. For reasons I fail to comprehend, the best price by some margin was getting the main unit on Amazon (evil, I know) and the sensor through Decathlon (less evil than Sports Direct, I think), both from the same "marketplace" retailer that doesn't seem to have their own web shop.
