Speaking as a German, I have been to American bakeries.
And I have to admit that they have an excellent selection of bread-shaped novelty sponges.

@juergen_hubert harsh but true (best bakery near me is Portuguese)
@juergen_hubert When I lived there, I got something called Russian rye, which was the closest I got to what I would consider a "proper" bread 😉
@juergen_hubert I bake my own for just this reason.
@btuftin @juergen_hubert me too, and for my favorite neighbors, especially those with kids.
@juergen_hubert American bread is a crime against bread. I say this as an American who has lived in Germany.
@juergen_hubert I've heard it's pretty awful, and when Americans come to Australia they think even our plainest bread is "amazing."
@juergen_hubert ... with sugar in it as well ? 😅
I found it best not to enquire too closely about what American items are made of.
@juergen_hubert I perfectly agree ...
