I try to remember that most people know about as much about politics as I know about basketball.

For example I am aware that the Knicks are a basketball team of NYC and they are doing a good job in the Very Big Game and it's exciting.

I don't know when the next game is or who they are playing (Is it the Bulls? They have that guy number 23 right? with the shoes?)

This is bad. If you like basketball you are disgusted. I need to "do better."

Well that's most people and political races.

Part of what clued me in that something Important in Baskeball News was going on was all of the screaming outside my apartment last night. And the people just bouncing down the street decked out in blue yellow and orange which no one would do on purpose.

Everyone is so happy in the city right now. I like that.

I'm not a hopeless nerd who calls things "sportsball" I pay attention to women's running, women's football and men's baseball.

OK I might still be a nerd.

But no "hopeless" ... maybe I could learn about basketball. It's just... IDK it's too gangly to watch.

@futurebird Have you tried cricket? :blobcatevil:

(I'm told there's something of an overlap between baseball and cricket, so it's not an entirely silly suggestion. We even have short forms of the game that only take a couple of hours now, too -- Twenty20, and the Hundred.)

    @futurebird
This reminds me of one year I lived close to UT campus and one of my housemates was a college student from Scotland. One night when the football team won a big game it was so joyously noisy and he got so annoyed at me for not wanting to drive him around honking the car horn with everyone 😂 He was a nice kid and shared some great music but I don't do traffic unless I have to!

@futurebird Except basketball is a game, and politics so isn’t. That I feel the need to point this out – even though not to you – drives me meshugah.

@futurebird Research shows that when you know you're going to vote, you get interested in the issues. I suspect Australia's system would get more people interested in politics in the USA, because
    1. Compulsory voting (everyone knows they will vote)
    2. Preferential voting (your minority views get at least some representation)
    3. Parliamentary system (you choose from my parties that match your views, rather than a roster of individuals to research and to select)

@futurebird I did not know any of the things you mentioned in your second paragraph. I do know that basketball is the one where they throw the ball through a hoop.

@futurebird reason nyc is going insane is this is the first Big Game appearance for the Knicks since 99 and they haven't won in 53 years
