This. Sitting here in a cafe in Norway right now. Everyone has access to a home or shelter, everyone has access to healthcare, everyone can get an education. Taxes are "high", but Norwegians seems to have more disposable income than the average American or Brit. They live in nicer houses and drive nicer cars.
Oh, and they hardly have any billionaires. Go figure.

This is an alternative to Omelas.

Instead of one child in a dungeon they've got 15 people who could have been billionaires but instead only have 50 million each. Every day these people have to struggle with their choice to remain Norwegian and so never become a billionaire.

@bhoutlook What chunk of this whole system has been built on the back of an immense natural resource riches -- Oil & Gas & Hydro? I am happy Norwegians are doing great, but this does not mean everyone has a clear path to it I am afraid.

@bhoutlook Otto von Bismarck didn't build the German welfare state because he was a bleeding heart socialist.

He did it, because educated healthy workers make the most money for the industrialists.
