    RE: mastodon.social/@verge/1161395

    “Amodei mentioned that “partial autonomous weapons … are vital to the defense of democracy” and that fully autonomous weapons may eventually “prove critical for our national defense,” but that “today, frontier AI systems are simply not reliable enough to power fully autonomous weapons.” He did not rule out Anthropic acquiescing to the military’s use of fully autonomous weapons in the future but mentioned that they were not ready now.”

    What fucking deranged fantasy world are these clowns living in? None of this garbage should even be close to anything where lives are at stake.

    @gregeganSF
    One where fascists who want to dismantle democracy deliver the tools to defend democracy fully autonomically, without any democratic institutions interfering.

    I.e. either one with zero logic, or one where fascists get to win but with the word "democracy" thrown in to hide the real intent.

    @gregeganSF a report about the USS Gettysburg friendly fire incident in the Red Sea mentioned that even the (relatively old, but upgraded over the years) AEGIS systems make engage/don't recommendations, which is part of why they shot down one F-18 and barely missed another

    @gregeganSF which is to say that of course all of that is, has been, and will continue to be a bad idea but it's one we're charging toward anyway.

    I think I've seen maybe one example of absolutely state-of-the-art auto-taxi for autonomous aircraft but people seem bound and determined to give those things kill authority even if they can't reliably drive around on the ground
