At the risk of asking a stupid question:

Does a computer (provably) function slower when it's been powered off for an extended period (weeks, months)? I've felt like this on several occasions when turning on old computers for the first time in ages, but I'm unsure whether it actually takes longer to boot up / run programs, or if it just feels slower because I'm used to newer, faster computers.

@bersl2 Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your response, but even a computer that is used daily, will have its internals cool to room temperature overnight before being used again. Does an extended period of being at room temperature affect chip performance?

@Intaglio_Dragon I think there’s that and also there are some things that are stored in NVRAM that are meant to persist between power offs, but after months may no longer be valid or the battery on the motherboard could have run out and caused the settings to be lost. If you power on the computer and the clock is wildly wrong that’s likely what has happened
