Construction is done on Energy Vault's 25MWh gravity battery near Shanghai, which stores energy from wind turbines as big bricks hoisted high into a mammoth structure. Energy then dispatched in evenings when solar peters out. Grid connection is scheduled the fourth quarter 2023.

A huge, tall building surrounded by construction cranes.

@dveditz yes, of course the company pitches the comparatively low fire risk as a big benefit over battery storage.

Oh! My brain deleted "gravity" and I thought this was the biggest chemical battery I've ever seen, and then I interpreted the "big bricks" as them moving giant batteries into place since it looked still under construction. (tired brain)

    Very cool!
