We originally wrote this paper nearly a year ago. As of last June, the CRASH Clock was at 5.5 days. It's now down to 2.5 days. It was 168 days in 2018, pre-Starlink.

It just keeps dropping as we launch more satellites into orbit.

This metric shows how completely dependent we are on continued perfect operations in orbit. 2/3 of all satellites today are Starlinks, and they performed 300,000 collision-avoidance maneuvers last year. They have done it perfectly so far. How long can that continue?

Caught in a mental loop wondering about the Linux "ip" command - specifically, why. It was a solved problem, and someone spent time to rewrite everything. I recall hearing something about the old tools being old and icky and no one wanting to maintain them anymore, so they made something that reminds me of the worst parts of a Cisco CLI.

I bet in fifteen, twenty years when the maintainers have turned over again they'll make an entirely new tool that does the same thing, again. Probably something embedded in systemd that requires privilege escalation to just look at a list of interfaces. At that point Wayland still won't have a functional screenreader, but that won't be considered a problem because it's been deprecated in favor of systemd-framebuffer which also doesn't have a functional screenreader. systemd will have also dropped support for 32 bit CPUs as well because no one wanted to implement a 32 bit systemd-ld_so - they were too busy getting the vibecoded systemd-chromium web browser to work with IPv6, without success.

Meanwhile BSD will still be using ifconfig because they never tried to fix a thing that wasn't broken.

We briefly recap the history of Dylan's constant.
