Did you know that Microsoft applied for a permit for a warehouse in southern Sweden - and once they had built the "warehouse" they declared they were going to host a datacenter there with diesel backup generators?

I mean, we hear this happening all the time and so let's hate on data centers, right?

The difference is that this is Sweden, and we don't accept that shit. They were not allowed to run their diesel generators, had to purchase battery power instead and in the end they closed the data center down since they couldn't win this fight.

That's how you deal with it.

(They are now using other datacenters in other locations in Sweden, fully compliant with the laws, with renewable energy and not using water for cooling as far as I can see)

Day 1 of unemployment and I've had a productive afternoon making inserts out of foamcore board for the display cabinet above my home office desk

Just completed a repair job on a small home gym setup.

Got it for 1/10th of retail price on craigslist.

It was disassembled. Had all the major pieces but was missing a lot of the screws and bolts that put it together.

So I got ahold of the assembly manual online. Took note of the size and material of the bolts and went to the local hardware store.

I love the local hardware store.

Bought individual screws and bolts as needed. Checked out. And came back and put everything together.

As an aside, you can really good workout equipment in late spring to mid summer. Everyone bought new equipment for new years for their new years resolutions, tried working out for a couple of months, and by the time summer rolls around they're just eager to get rid of it.

You know why I can read Classical Chinese? Because I have spent the last year slowly but surely making a complete handwritten copy of my favorite textbook. Every explanation. Every example sentence. With my own original translations and margin notes. On nice sturdy paper with a pen I find comfortable to use. I’m at 183 handwritten pages so far.

(Gonna repeat again that a lot of people who think they hate writing by hand actually hate cheap ballpoints that hurt their hands.)
