WOW!!! @treefit got #DeltaChat (with chatmail core and all!!!) running in the browser!

this prototype is incredibly awesome and working way too good already!

there was some #Tauri version of Delta Chat desktop but that still was just about displaying the UI in the browser, you still depend on a local program and local #chatmail core in your machine

with this the whole thing is running on the client side in your browser tab! the chatmail core is compiled into #wasm

still since you can't connect to IMAP and SMTP from javascript, a proxy is needed to get this prototype working but JUST IMAGINE if chatmail relays would support/allow clients to connect via websocket or http!

- DMs are already end-to-end encrypted
- your identity is your encryption key and doesn't depend on a single home server
- your profile is basically uncensorable

@philip running a chatmail relay for Delta Chat instead of an xmpp server is indeed more interesting! and yours would get more used than your xmpp server, because in Delta Chat users have multi-homing and can use several servers at the same time or migrate away of servers easily without losing any message, chat or contact, so that makes easy to use any small server without worrying it will disappear overnight

with xmpp you have to be more careful selecting your xmpp server since you will be bound to it forever

as a server admin it is also easier for you to host a chatmail relay for Delta Chat, it requires zero maintenance, accounts are created and removed automatically, messages (encrypted blobs) are also deleted automatically you need to do nothing!

with a xmpp server you have to be more careful with your privacy policy and GDPR etc. because users can send unencrypted messages so you are responsible for potentially sensitive user data, with chatmail all messages are forced to be encrypted so you have no user data at all and it is GDPR compliant out of the box

@michaelharley if you want to get positively surprised, go for Delta Chat, server is super cheap to host and require the least maintenance of all that options you mentioned

it is also the only one of those that has multi-homing meaning people don't depend on your server and can use several at the same time or migrate away of yours etc. meaning even if your server goes down or during maintenance time, they can keep receiving messages etc.

it is also the only one of those that is if you fucked it up and wiped the whole server, can automatically recover without the users even noticing (you don't even need server backups! because there is no groups etc metadata in the server and accounts are automatically re-created on login)

you don't need to worry about storage and account management, accounts get created and removed automatically, storage is removed automatically as well and by default the clients will also delete messages immediately from server after downloading them

it is also the one with the most user-friendly interface and cohesive experience across platforms, the one with the best pain-free multi-device support that just works

in xmpp the group depends on the server, if the server is gone the group is dead, in matrix a lot of group metadata is on the server and reactions are not even encrypted
