@robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale Google apps and services can be installed on GrapheneOS as regular sandboxed apps. You can test both with and without Google Mobile Services on GrapheneOS.
Devices without Google Mobiles Services are increasingly popular and apps should fully work without it. Many popular mainstream apps do including even the Facebook app suite.
There are alternatives to Google services. For example, apps can default to FCM when present while offering UnifiedPush as an alternative.

@GrapheneOS @robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale will GrapheneOS get a default distributor? The UX pf having to get one is not really great. Similarly to TTS (although tts is more important)

@GrapheneOS @robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale one thing that would be cool is to have graphene integrate a unifiedpush client directly in the OS (disabled by default at first until you find someone that agree to be the default).
So later you can enable it and have your own notification mechanism ... while allowing user to host their own (if you select ntfy based client).

@GrapheneOS @robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale For quite some time I have been using sandboxed Google Play Services in my main profile now. Apps such as NINA work out of the box and the overall experience is smoother than without them.

@GrapheneOS @robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale okay I'm a bit confused. Can you like use Twitter or Mastodon or whatever without downloading it from Google Play Store?

@GrapheneOS @robeeshepherd @joshdinsdale Works fine with Tusky on mobile as a Mastodon client.
Using ntfy as distributor on a debian-vps (podman/caddy) with ntfy-connector app on an ungoogled Graphene (nextpush on both sides also was fine for me).
Rumors say Mozilla is running kinda public connector for people without vps.
