@roo @Velveteen it's not an unusual failure mode, DRAM as used in PCs is striped across multiple chips, one chip for each bit

so it's easily possible for one or two of the chips to be failing when the others are fine, and dram failures are usually intermittent (if they're not, the computer will invariably crash)
