All the AppleTalk/#GlobalTalk things are working! Colors are funky, though. I still haven't changed the 24-bit hardcoding and need to fix that. Anyway, time to stop and get the current changes checked in.

A Mini vMac window is running System 7.1.1 and displaying a Chooser window in which we see AppleShare servers. Behind the Chooser, GlobalTalk Chat is visible. Behind the Mini vMac window, we can see a Solaris 7 desktop.

Coming back to this after a few days, I was able to fix the color issue. Each pixel is stored as a 24-bit value of the form RRGGBB, but XWindows wants BBGGRR (note the color mask values printed in the terminal). Attempts to change the mask values didn't work, but swapping those bytes in SCRNTRNS.h did. I think I've missed something about where to set the mask values so will revisit this fix. Drawing performance is pretty abysmal and needs further investigation.

The Mini vMac program is running on an emulated Solaris 7 machine. Its window is frontmost and shows the Finder displaying icons, which all have the expected colors.

@_the_cloud I find Globaltalk on MAE running on Solaris 2.6 quite responsive. In fact more so than on a Mac OS9 Macintosh. How’s Mini Vmac on Sol7?

@fergycool It's hard to compare because you have a "real" Solaris box and mine is being emulated. MvM is not quite as responsive as MAE at the moment, which might be down to how the image colors are being remapped.

@_the_cloud I was more referring to the network aspect as mounting shares from Chooser seems quite quick. I should do some proper tests though as this is purely my subjective opinion. Perhaps it’s the noise of the 10k drive spinning that makes it “feel faster”. Go Faster Drives! ;-)

@fergycool Yes, the networking part seems just as fast as MAE. There is a technical difference in that with MvM, AppleTalk is being tunneled over UDP, while MAE can send AppleTalk packets directly using its streams module. But AppleTalk is the slow part, not UDP. As you say, proper tests are in order.
