Was feeling like being a turtle, so I made turtle art using #P5js #ohjeeva #creativeCoding Turtle art is basically a set of instructions (move forward, turn, lift pen) steering a robot or turtle, which lead to intricate designs. Fun stuff. Probably more coming.
Due to an hourly frequency on a local line (in comparison to the standard half hour in NL) I will be home half an hour later than expected from the system.
Could be worse: instead I have a comfy NS intercity on an alternative route with more travel time, but the same arrival time of the more direct hourly connection. System failure? Not really. But still, could be better. Frequency matters, as departure times cannot always be planned. In my case a work thing. Then frequency matters
When going floor shopping, it is always useful to take some colour samples of your furniture with you. We found the ideal ones, and they are modular :D
Update: failure seems to have spread further through the country, with departures falling from timetables without any further passenger information other than "system failure".
Our train and following trains from the west in the direction of Deventer got cancelled in Apeldoorn due to a "system failure". Nothing in the NS app and website, but the disruption is documented on other platforms. Weird stuff...
Also the real time departure information in the NS app is broken.
Is this NS? Digital stuff? Farmer terrorism again? Nothing, no info. Interesting times.
In the end ended up arriving an hour later than the original first connection, with an emergency replacement bus arriving within 15 mins of original departure time. A huge win on paper, the user experience however...
The travel time from arrival at the station was 2:45 compared to a 36 min (33km) car trip. The hourly frequency from the train that DID run further added an extra half hour delay, and the lack of proper passenger information made it quite stressful. Could be worse, could be better.
Went to check out the cool new trams and the station in Liège. What I got instead: Police firing water cannons at school children, a car infested run down city stinking of urine, and cancelled trains with no further information in any other language than french.
Dutch SNCB website confidently stating that there are rail replacement busses. Arriva (who actually runs the trains) has no idea or no information on their website whatsoever.
Happy fun times. Cool new trams though.
Fun fact: The Dutch DDZ #trains have Canadian maple leaf patterned speaker grills to honor the Canadian manufacturing heritage of #bombardier . Let's hope #Canada may yet regain that capability some day. 🇪🇺🚃🇨🇦
@Marloezovic zou het niet prachtig zijn als het door #mediahuis opnieuw gelanceerde #hyves ook met de #fediverse zou kunnen federeren? Een beetje als Threads, maar dan niet zo toxisch
New development in the automobile obesity era: newly built sheds on wheels no longer fit the double decked car transport #trains in the EU. This means double length (single deck) trains, with the extra strain impounded on the network and the consumer alike.
Grand total of #KMtrein kilometer kampioen: 839.8km out of a planned 907.8km. Not bad for a first time effort if I can say so myself, but missing that last leg to Groningen really took out a chunk of kilometers. Main lesson learned: start in Zwolle to head North to save margin for extra Northern kilometers.
We had a great time and it was nice to see a bunch of places I haven't been to in a while.
Ended the 12 hour race in Enschede. Not the planned route but had a blast nonetheless #KMtrein
The first true failure of the original plan: the train to Zwolle is delayed beyond our transfer. We'll be filling the last kilometers with the train to Enschede instead, assuming we still make that #DMtrein.
Still, running 10 out of 12 hours on planning is a good performance in my book. Especially considering the 800-something kilometers travelled and the amount of network disruption and subsequent non-standard timetables due to construction works this weekend.
In an unfortunate turn of events the train is delayed at Utrecht due to a person on the tracks. This wrecks our chances at our stretch goal, but safety is always more important than a #KMtrein game. With the stretch goal out of reach, we are still on track for a 33-12=21 layover at 's Hertogenbosch for some snacks.
Notification in the NS app: you have checked in more than three hours ago, did you forget to check out? Well, ehm, no. I'm, you know, doing the thing xD
Made Rotterdam on schedule and hit the checkpoint. Now on towards 's Hertogenbosch via Leiden and Amsterdam! #kmtrein
Unfortunately one of the stops didn't register correctly in the scoring system, so we'll have to wait until the organisation fixes it to get a tally.
Next up: Make or break point, a 3 min run at 15:51
And off along the longest straight object in the Netherlands, the tracks between Assen and Hoogeveen. (Only the left side, the right side bends at Beilen). Making serious progress now. Next transfer at Amsterdam Zuid #kmtrein
Caught an unlikely connection in Leeuwarden, that means 17 mins for second coffee and second breakfast! #kmtrein
Today marks the day of #kmtrein kilometer kampioen! I will be participating in and liveblogging this event. Goal: travel as many kilometers as possible in a 12 or 25 hour time period.
I'm a soft boiled office egg so I will be participating in the 12 hour variant. If all goes well the grand total will be 907.7 kilometres, with a 3 min opportunity in 's Hertogenbosch to get even more. Let's go!
Seeing a 10 car dubbele decker train running a 20km route due to track sabotage wasn't on my list for today, yet here we are.
At 27 points in NL train traffic is disrupted. Bastards. Hopefully the western parts of the country have enough train capacity, because a significant amount of rolling stock is now stuck in the east.
