There are studies that show increased productivity with multiple screens or larger screens, increased productivity with work from home, increased productivity with offices vs open plan, increased productivity with noise reduction.

They never have money for that tho.

The only time they pull out the corporate credit card is when they think they might just be able to get rid of you altogether.

Funny thing is, the few studies we have so far on LLMs don’t give a clear picture of productivity. Various forms of measurements show negative, neutral or slightly elevated productivity.

    The ROI evidence is nonexistent.

It’s all CEO desperate hopes and vibes.

Was listening to a colleague saying today how the only reason VC"s have been so frenetically shovelling money at "AI" is that it promises them the ability to be able to finally replace the legacy software / providers, so that they are no longer beholden to traditional enterprise "moats"

    In other words, the old:
"Those who have no talent/skill are lusting after a future where they can finally be rid of all those pesky "professionals / craftspeople / experts"

@patigallardo.bsky.social I don't want to increase my productivity any more than it is. Already we are so productive but wages do not match. Multiple screens are good for my sanity though. And my work does provide those. Remote saves companies money, does it not? Not providing an office has to be cheaper.

@RBWells @patigallardo.bsky.social I hate it when I have multiple points 😅 if productivity gains leads to a 4-day work week? (Also shown to increase productivity btw) Then bring it on. You’d think wfh was popular because of that, but extroverts have a need to stare at you, also they don’t believe you’re working if they can’t see you 🙄

Similar studies show huge benefits from lower student to teacher ratios, quality music and arts instruction, better lit, more humane classrooms, and yet the same nupties insist that we run public services “like a bizness”.
Lower expenditures is not the same as more efficient. 😞

I truly believe that people who care about noise pollution are the largest un organized voting bloc in the US

trouble is, we are nice people, so we won't form a single issue org like NRA

@patigallardo.bsky.social Multiple desktops work as well as multiple screens for me.Bonus is less power wasted and the same workflow works on laptops while on the move.

Shame M$ can't make one work since the 90's. They had a version in dev tools but it was so flakey. Excel's content (not the UI frame) was always stuck on workspace 1 because of them using their internal ABIs to out-compete any app developer.

    Did they ever fix it?

Mostly the two first at the places I've been, but mostly lacking offices/smaller areas with just some desks and noise reduction.

I’ve always found office space design to be baffling. We just ignore all scientific evidence and go for «what will look good in a picture».

Never even considering the second order costs.

My whole life is being continuously baffled.

It should be more and more weird the more productivity we expect from your workers to not invest in making them productive-- we don't ask athletes to run in hiking boots, but optimise everything around them

It makes it less and less credible that they are actually concerned with «productivity». And more and more likely that they are optimizing for control and surveillance.

The places I've been lately it has been about money it seems. So saving on one bill but not seeing the indirect cost it creates.
