"The enemies of ordinary people in Scotland don’t wear niqabs or burqas. They wear smartly ironed, shiny new suits, and sit right over there"

Women who wear the niqab or burqa deserve to live their lives free from discrimination, intimidation and hatred.

Reform’s attempt to ban their clothing has nothing to do with public safety. It is about singling out Muslim women and telling them they don’t belong.

Scotland must reject this far-right politics of hate.

Maggie Chapman MSP speaking in the Scottish Parliament against Reform UK’s motion on banning burqas and niqabs in public places. She condemns the motion as racist and Islamophobic, argues that it unfairly targets Muslim women, and declares: “The enemies of the ordinary people of this country don’t wear niqabs, they don’t wear burqas. They wear smartly ironed, shiny new suits, and are sat right over there.”

Will they be agitating against those un-English kilts too? Or, as my neighbour said, "men wearing skirts". I'd buy popcorn for that, though the fight would probably be over quickly. Scots Highlanders and Muslim women, what an alliance.

Seriously, it really annoys me and I hope their attempt causes people to think about what's driving it.
