Me: *looks at midterm election results*

    “Oh!”

    Cautiously, very good.

Will we see impeachment proceedings? I think the possibility exists.

@bloor on what grounds, and then wouldn’t that just give JD Vance a head start on the next presidential election?

@theolodian I am pretty confident there are plenty of grounds a suitably minded house and senate could find. All the Russia stuff, the strait of Hormuz, Iran, the insider/family investing and pumping. Probably plenty of options.

@bloor @theolodian there was someone on the radio yesterday arguing reasonably that there's no point in trying to impeach him *again*, and the smart play is to go after *all* his underlings instead.

On the basis that he'll be a lame duck for a couple of years and then gone, so it's better to cut off the next generation

@ahnlak @theolodian Doesn't the idea of going after underlings rather go out the window with "Presidential Pardon" as an option? I realise he could just issue a sweep of them immediately impeachment proceedings started too.

@ahnlak @theolodian I wasn't saying you could. What I was saying was Trump could easily protect all his underlings by simply pardoning the whole lot of them.

@bloor @theolodian he can certainly try, but that assumes they're all still in his favour at that point.

There's also limitations around "pre-emptive pardons" so they might just keep quiet about it until he leaves?

@bloor there will be loads of investigations, and a lot of pressure to impeach. Ultimately impeachment is a political judgment, not a criminal one. However, it further undermines trust in politics if they don’t have a reasonable legal justification for impeachment.

@theolodian @bloor Yeh and in some ways Vance appears to be worse than Trump.
The democrats mustn't scare off the wavering voters they've gained if they actually want to get a president in.

@penguin42 @bloor the problem is that midterms are an election without a manifesto. There is a wide range of politics amongst these new congresspeople. I’ll be amazed if they agree on a coherent approach.
