And this, folks, is why every #sysadmin you know is absolutely hating life right now and actively reconsidering their career choices.

@me Saw the writing on the wall in 2024. Tried medical stuff, wasn't a good fit, now I'm learning PLCs and hydraulics and stuff. Hoping that a field where vibecoding will rapidly cause very expensive industrial accidents might be slower to force pseudointelligence on workers. Obviously, the suits couldn't give a single shit about worker's lives, but damage to facilities and resulting downtime is going to affect their quarterly bonuses.
@frobozz @me for me, it was pressure - always growing. back in 2017, when AI was not even known. I had to constantly learn new things, physical and virtual server count was never decreasing, only increasing. One thing didn't change - my salary. So I waved good-bye to IT back then. Not a light decision, but no regrets so far...
@frobozz @me I hear that CNC machines have arrangements to slurp the programs the machine operators are writing. There's a future where there's no career path from swarf-sweeper to part-designer.
Meatspace is where the rubber meets the road, as you point out. LLMs would not be appropriate, but there are physics/engineering/spatial awareness ML tools that could maybe be applied, ethics, liability and economics notwithstanding.
@me glad we don't have any Cisco hardware in our network.
@me I really hate The Doors. But, ah ... bunnanung, buh nung, This is the End ...
@me way ahead of you, PHP already did it last week. And it wasn't even issues themselves but sheer panic around them that makes me want to go screw it.
@peteriskrisjanis the PHP one really sucked. There was a proof-of-concept released the night before the patch was released, trivial exploit which we were able to prove against our own infra. Everything had to come down until the patch went out.
@me Uh, and also how PHP fail was caught.
Analysis Methodology:
- Trace user-controlled inputs (e.g., $_GET, $_POST, $_COOKIE, $_REQUEST, $_FILES) to their sinks.
- Look for missing or inadequate input sanitization, output encoding, and parameterization (e.g., PDO prepared statements).
- Verify that administrative boundaries and privilege checks are enforced on sensitive scripts.
@me IT is eating itself.
@me every coder yes,
sysadmin no. Sysadmin is pretty safe.
@pterlisten @me It's not the threat of being replaced but that they have to be the ones to pick up the pieces by wading through these rivers of shit after they implode.
@pterlisten @me safe != worth the stress
@pterlisten the "emergency patch of the hour" treadmill is really grinding and with all the vibe-coded dreck being deployed to every corner of the planet it's not going to improve.
@me It was a primary driver in my decision to get out of the web hosting business two years ago.
@me i hate the headline too. Sane-washing isn’t just for Trump anymore.
That's it; I've had enough. We're going back to sorting packets by hand, on punched cards. Great security but slightly worse ping times.
