Dear fedi I'm livid. An acquaintance of mine almost finished college and after doing an *unpaid* six months internship was offered a follow-up contract for less than 500€ a month. If you wonder why European young people are mad that's pretty much why.

I'll be doing anything in my power to make sure he'll never work there so if you have an opening or internship for a young person starting his career let me know.

He'll finish the equivalent of a bachelor in computer science in May next year, has done some six months of hands-on work in security and is one hell of a worker. I can personally vouch for him. He's based in Italy and can do both in-person and remote work, and might be able to relocate to the NL and possibly the UK if need be.

Boosts appreciated.

Chow's also campaigning for the one thing that I think could fundamentally change our society: funded school lunches for all.

It builds the infrastructure and community resilience for us to feed everyone locally at scale in the long run.

It is ironic that some of the absolute worst story blurbs come from the authors themselves.

Seriously, ask your friends/beta readers/a stranger if your blurb makes them want to read the story before putting it out there. It's hard for an author to not be too close to the work and thus incapable of looking at it from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about it.

Meanwhile on Meta 🤣

There are complaints emerging that comments on a group post are winding up linked into different posts in the same group. This is causing moderators more than a little frustration.

I'm going to hypothesize that this is the result of an update where the developers used AI to generate code, and then failed to review that code to find edge case bugs that were created in the process.

Right. From now on, I'm calling the current US President "Joe Trump."

What a turd.

"my friend just moved to the area" scam:

On Instagram: nah, that's cool

On Mastodon: account closed.

I do hope that the Canadian businesses who have just seen relief from Trump's ill thought out tariffs see fit to raise their prices by 20% or so.

After all, if the non-Canadian alternatives are so overpriced that a 50% tariff doesn't make them uncompetitive, there's definitely some room to make some extra bucks!

@morph But, alas.

I'm trying to understand why it is that if I'm no longer in the hosting business, why is it that I have five terminal windows open to upgrade PHP. 🤣

Rule of the day:
if email body contains "trusted {my name} server"
and it didn't come from my server
then spam score is 100,000!

(okay, actually 20 but that's enough to punt it)

Four word subject arrived at, latest newsletter sent. I might even get to writing my story sometime today.

Just kidding. I'm baked.

Task of the moment: come up with an email subject less than 200 words.

It's not working.

Aughh. 🤪

Well it looks like a whole bunch of Alberta separatists just ran out of whatever it was that they were smoking. I bet detox is going to take some time.

Ah the joys of email previews.

Subject: 50% off your next {product}?

ooh, interesting...

Preview: You could be the lucky one who wins...

Message deleted. That's actually at best a 0.001 chance of a 50% discount, statistically 0.05% (so, a whopping 50 cents on a $1000 expenditure) if I engage at least 1000 times.

Shit offer. NO THANKS.

It's very easy to get depressed by the state of politics right now, but then you see interactions like this one, and it rekindles your faith. A new generation of politicians will come forward and they will be different.

One of the most baffling things about the modern world is just how fucking passive everyone is while a handful of people destroy everything.

Side benefit: the logs are giving me all sorts of new requests to dump into the "you're firewalled" list. That takes a few seconds under load, but completely stops the attack.
