    have you noticed whenever there is a billion dollar hack of crypto, everything just keeps working?

    nothing is disrupted, because it’s not useful for anything.

    @hbons I find it always funny that the “we don’t need any authority” guys are calling for the authorities to help them.

    @hbons i originally thought that cryptocurrency might get its use in reducing the power of authoritarian governments or moralistic payment processors

    sadly, as it often turns out, if you set up a libertarian movement primarily around economic concerns, it becomes ridiculously easy for the authoritarians or the oligarchs to buy you off

    like, as a left-liberal i can respect libertarians who actually stand by the "liberty" part of their principles (it is worth noting that "libertarian" was originally a label that included anarchists, and in languages like #esperanto, the equivalent term is still "liberecano" ("one aligned with liberty")), but in most cases i find that they sell out the moment they get any morsel of power

    @rnd @hbons

    And many of them were of course racist white people before they became "libertarians", and will flock to that banner over the corpse of their lesser convictions.

    @hbons When a card processor goes down, shops stop taking payments and people notice within the hour. A billion dollars leaves an exchange and the only people who notice are the ones who kept coins there.

    @hbons It's very useful for transferring money to your corrupt politician/wannabe dictator.
