But what about photos and drive? Proton photos lets me drop them off my phone, unlike, say Google.
What's a good alternative that encrypts photos, backs up off your phone, and keeps them even when deleted off phone?

Tuta is working on a cloud drive, in closed beta. I do not know the answers to your questions about photos, however.
@draNgNon I'm using @ente myself and pretty happy with it so far. Has everything you ask for.
@zeitkapsl also looks promising - and European!
@illi @ente @zeitkapsl how long have you been using it? I was looking at it before migrating photos to proton
@draNgNon @Rob_J @jabex @tezoatlipoca @GossiTheDog @Tutanota recently setup pixelunion.eu specifically to replace google photos. It does the job really well. Uses the open source project immich.

@draNgNon For drive and photo backup to/via the cloud, I've been using pCloud for years. My fileserver at home has it mounted and copies files out every few minutes so I have a purely local copy.
For browsing/searching photos, pCloud is terrible however :(
