back in my early teens in the 80s, my friend's family owned a mom-n-pop #vhs rental place so we watched a LOT of dumb #movies

This week for the first time in 40yrs, I rewatched both #MonsterSquad and #Goonies

Honestly...meh. I should have loved Goonies, but 90% of the dialogue is at TOP VOLUME and exhausting. It's also 20m too long. Die Hard's Special Agent Johnson (no relation) as a Fratelli was incredible, tho.

Monster Squad does NOT hold up for multiple reasons even in just the first 5 minutes. But later a major plot point is photographing a teen girl and using that as blackmail to get her to help. There's not even any attempted justification like that she was mean to them or anything.

It's also painfully clear how hard MS was trying to be Goonies. I couldn't figure out why Dracula would be using sticks of dynamite until we got to the dynamite scenes in Goonies. Frankenstein = Sloth, Horace = Chunk, etc. The mom is *the same actor*.

We're thinking about #transylvania65000 tonight (can't believe that's already a tag!)
