heeyyyy so jsyk the #french government, due to the currently ongoing mass protests, attempted to pressure ISPs into blocking access to social networks.

we only know this because ISPs refused and the official meeting letter was leaked to the press.

this is some proper authoritarian bullshit. human rights country my ass. spread the word, the world has to know what's happening in france.

it is also rumored that snapchat, tiktok, instagram etc are currently actively censoring protests related topics, as there was a very recent meeting between their PR depts and the gov where they were asked to cooperate.

people are now complaining that they have barely no images of yesterday's protests, that some accounts and/or posts have been shadowbanned, etc.

as the rest of the information landscape in france is mostly controlled by billionaires and the government, this is pretty much akin to a partial press blackout, as the only counter-narrative finds its roots in mass social networks.

@kouett This is why protests need to have communication channels outside of corporate-owned social media. This does not mean that they shouldn't also use social media, just avoid dependence on it.
The tools exist. They need to be more widespread.

@kouett @blast_info I mean ban social media for sure, but for the right reasons.
Not paying your fines, meta? Your DNS is blocked for a month, yes some people will be stuck and annoyed for a time but they will realise they don't own anything on these platforms.
When the fine is paid there's a banner covering 25% of the height for 6 months explaining to their users how they screwed them over and not the government.
