People really exaggerate the extent to which mecha pilots are “forced” to pilot. People always say the genre is about adults forcing children to fight but it’s more common for the kids to steal the mechs and pilot them against the adults’ wishes.

I think some people have mistaken those “get in the robot, Shinji” memes for the entire genre.
