@liztai I think she’s popular because she’s very pretty. But yes, her makeup in tigers sniff the rose is peculiar. Anyway, I find her wooden and I just have never seen any chemistry with her costars.

When I see Meng Ziyi on variety shows she seems so very much more lively and natural. I wish we saw that version of her in cdramas.

It’s not just more natural styling that suits her more, it’s that she has a natural vibrancy and chemistry with her coleads that we only rarely glimpse in dramas. I can’t believe that she would be incapable of performing that way in dramas given how much of what we see in variety shows *is performance/acting.*

So, I am convinced that for some reason directors *want* Meng Ziyi to look like that and behave so stiffly in dramas. There’s an aesthetic that male directors seem to find captivating — or they all wouldn’t be trying to create it with her — but she’s become typed by it.

Unfortunately, while Idol cDramas target market is women, the men making them still seem to be oblivious to how much their male-gaze priorities and repression of women’s expressiveness lower the overall quality and appeal to women.

I’m thinking that, like Bai Lu, we may only get to see her range and get a true measure of her skills when she gets to work with a female director in a woman-centric, female-gaze oriented cdrama. I’m not sure she could deliver a Bai Lu in ***The First Jasmine*** level performance, but I’m almost certain she could give so much more, especially in a comedy.

@AlsoPaisleyCat @gekidasa I honestly think that she's just a bad actress. I would be convinced the director thing if not for the fact that Liu Xueyi acted with her in Princess' Gambit and he outacted her and everyone else by a mile. However I do concede that she was a little bit better in Blossom. Part of a problem is she looks the same in all her dramas. This breaks immersion for me.

I agree about her looking the same in every drama.

One has to wonder why her agency and directors would choose that though when she’s not styles that way for promotions or variety shows.

I’ve noticed her showing a bit more range already in the early episodes of ***Tigers Sniff the Rose*** so I am looking to see if she can be more than a porcelain doll moonlight fantasy in a stronger role.

I’ll let folks know but I have to say that I absolutely understand why people wouldn’t give this a chance: we’ve been spoiled with some much better non-Idol dramas.

@AlsoPaisleyCat yea I tend to switch between both and each time I come back from mainstream dramas I get whiplash at how poorly made and acted idol dramas are. It's a real pity (and quite aggravating) that Netflix isn't diversifying the Cdrama selection because it gives international folks the wrong impression about Cdramas 😬
