So "ID required" laws for social media that compromise everyone's privacy due to data leaks and lock LGBTQ kids out of information have LITERALLY ZERO impact on safety?

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io just one more law bro, just let us restrict speech a little bit more, it'll totally save the children this time, trust us
@thomasfuchs Well, at least they don't have a negative impact... (It actually seems kinda unlikely to me that they don't, but it may depend on how that's measured.)
@woozle it does have measurable negative impact, via data leaks and via making information (e.g. LGBTQ and other things) inaccessible to young people
@thomasfuchs Clearly the way forward is even more of the same (I'm sure governments are saying already)
@thomasfuchs
„We urgently need stronger action from tech companies to rein in features that drive harm to children and stop putting business interests over their safety obligations.”
As if this would happen… have you tried saying „Pretty please, dear tech company“?
We need to regulate the shit out of these bastards!
Hi @hpod16, and @EUCommission (if anyone even monitors this account for replies and notifications), please kindly read the article above how the UK OSA is not working at all. And please focus on solutions which targets (and penalise) perpetrators, instead of already minorised victims.
Hi @agturcz, thank you for taging us. We do monitor our replies, although we cannot answer them all.
We are currently collecting feedback on our proposed rules for keeping children safe online. You can take part in the open public consultation here:

@thomasfuchs time for an "I told you so" letter to my MP, maybe? See if I can force him to say something other than "the prime minister (which is now a different prime minister) believes... (bullshit)" this time.
@thomasfuchs
They were never supposed to protect children. Forcing everyone to doxx themselves was the entire point.
@thomasfuchs It's a myriad of failures.
Clearly, parents as a category want to park their kids in front of screens and be left alone, despite the dangers. They're probably giving kids their access to these apps.
Legislators aren't properly regulating dangerous content and people who distribute it. That's not going to change due to the amount of money involved.
And kids are seemingly too lazy to use analog methods to communicate and/or entertain themselves.
Not sure there is a solution.
@thomasfuchs That said, I wish the solution from so many wasn't to just do nothing and let an evidently building problem to get worse.
This is clearly a harmful product, and I'd much rather kids have to communicate vocally via an actual phone call than be sucked into them, personally.
@thomasfuchs if there's one thing the people who love to abuse their power do, it's to force solutions to nonexistant problems to become law. Delusion of grandeur...
@thomasfuchs id for socials is an advertisers wet dream. It allows better ad tracking and stops bugdet spending on advertising to bots.
@thomasfuchs It’s had lots of impacts on safety and privacy. Just not the claimed impacts, or beneficial.
