Me:...White folks and POC with respectability politics defanged BLM.

Rando in my mentions: just say 'some people'.

    Me: No.
    ---

    I like clarity in writing.

So I will give Rando some grace and bring MOAR clarity to what I thought was already explicit:
White liberals, white mods and conservatives, and POC who think there is safety in being white-adjacent, were not only resistant to the goal of defunding the police they were openly hostile to it, giving explicit approval to policies that allowed police departments to further militarize and attack our communities.

    There. Clarity.

'Some people' lets folks off the hook for this current moment and folks can fuck that right in the ear.

Like, just a few days ago the MS AG said the cop that shot and killed a 1 year old Black baby (based on a dubious claim of 'shoplifting') was cleared. It was a good shooting to her. Justifiable.

THAT ability to kill Black folks with impunity we wanted to DEFUND.

From the AG to prosecutors to local cops we wanted it all busted down to the studs because the entire system is a charnel house grinding up Black and brown people -- but specifically Black people at much higher rates than anyone else.

It's true that when we solve for the people closest to the problem other people's boats rise.

The converse is also true: when we don't, other boats get pulled under, too.

My larger point: At some point, Reconstruction after Trump will begin. Rebuilding a New America had better NOT begin with the needs and concerns of the bougie middle. Reconstruction needs to begin by *solving for the margin*, not the center. Otherwise nothing will fucking change.

@DeliaChristina I’ll never forgive Biden for* encouraging local governments to spend emergency COVID-mitigation funds on cops.

    *among other things 🙃

    THAT.

He was one of the worst copaganda kool-aid drinkers in the Senate:

*His Senate Years: Expanding Federal Law Enforcement (1973–1993)
As a senator from Delaware, Biden helped advance the federal government's increasingly aggressive response to crime and drug trafficking.

    Major legislative actions:
*Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984: Biden supported legislation that expanded federal law enforcement powers, strengthened sentencing provisions, and changed federal bail and forfeiture laws.

*Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986: Biden supported legislation establishing harsh federal drug penalties, including the notorious 100:1 sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine.

*Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988: Biden played a significant role in advancing federal drug enforcement policy, including expanded penalties, enforcement resources, and the creation of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

    @zackstern

    (Cont)
Federal law enforcement funding: Biden consistently advocated for increased federal support for local police departments, drug enforcement, and federal investigative agencies.

Policy orientation: Federal intervention, aggressive drug enforcement, increased penalties, and expanded police resources.

All of this basically created the punitive federal drug-policy framework associated with the War on Drugs.

Impact: Fell disproportionately on Black communities, particularly through crack cocaine sentencing disparities.

    @zackstern

And then there's the Crime Bill:

As chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Biden was a principal architect of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, signed by *President Bill Clinton.*

The legislation authorized approximately *$30 billion in federal spending* on expanding police department capacity.

    *add 100,000 community police officers
*Establish the federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program
*Allocate approximately *$9.7 billion for correctional facilities*
*federal three-strikes provisions and expanded penalties
*Expanded the number of federal capital offenses
**Established major protections and funding for domestic and sexual violence prevention and response (He has been riding the laurels of VOCA/VAWA for fucking decades)
*Established a federal assault weapons ban
*Authorized billions for prevention, intervention, and treatment programs

A mixed record of investment and expansion while also trying to nibble at reform, moderately.

@DeliaChristina 💯 and even worse for me is the fact that so many people think the police were defunded. Like I'm in SF and city moderates are still defunding the libraries to fund police OT.
