    The problem isn’t this technology or that technology, people, the problem is capitalism. The problem is authoritarianism. The problem is a system of normalised hierarchy and privilege.

    @aral thank you aral, too many people reduce this down to technology is bad and lose the nuance about why this is happening in the conversation. it’s why i’m quite fond of the xenofeminist manifesto. everything i can do to be anti-capitalist i will use whatever technology is accessible to me to do so and to do praxis. the technology itself isn’t bad, it’s how capitalism uses it to maintain the status quo and class stratification

    @astra Thanks, hadn’t heard of it, on my reading list now. From a quick skim and from what you just summarised, it sounds entirely compatible with our approach in Small Tech and how I feel about things. We’re already fighting with one arm tied behind our backs because of the power asymmetry (lack of investment/resources), we cannot do so with both due to some purism about tools. We have to separate what we build from how we build it and ensure the artefacts and topology we’re building are fit for purpose. But, yes, I will use every tool in my arsenal to fight the system. I don’t have the luxury of not doing so. I don’t work at Google during the day and hack on my personal open source blog in the evenings to cleanse my conscience and I won’t be taking lessons from those who do.
